NOT ONLY POSSESSIONS (08-01-10)

Luke 12:15
“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
---------------------------------------------------------

Having grew up in a family that has just enough, I have always dreamed to achieve more in life. Not only in stature in life, but also in having more possessions like a car, a house and more. I did say that I was able to achieve those things, and more.

And now, I came to realize that those things were given to me for a purpose. Those things were given to me, not for my own use, but to be able to share with others who would need my help – starting with my own family.

Most of the time, we insist to have more. Another car, another house, another celphone. But do we want it because we need it, or do we buy it so others may envy us; so that others may praise us.

In today’s gospel, Jesus is telling us that one’s richness not only consist of possessions. We may possess everything in this world, but still we are not rich. Yes, we may be rich in human standards, but God’s standards goes beyond possessions and things.

For God looks at the richness of our hearts. How many people are happy today because you shared your richness with them? How many people are happy today, because through you, they came to know eternal life? How many people are happy today, simply because you care for them?

It is human relations, and not possessions. That is what God wants us to enrich in our lives. For in entering heaven, what matters most is our relationship with God and with others while we are here on earth.

Let us pray +

Lord Jesus, You are the personification of love and the fulfillment of the law. You are the fullest expression of God’s lovefor us. Teach us to follow Your example for only through a committed relationship with You and others could we fulfill the law. Amen +

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
