DELIVER US FROM EVIL (3-31-10)

Holy Wednesday

Matthew 26:21
“Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
----------------------------------------------

Thirty pieces of silver. The legal price of a slave. They purchased Jesus like any other slave so there is some legality in handing him over to the Roman authorities. That Jesus, who took the role of servant for us all, was purchased for the price of a slave.

Thirty pieces of silver. For Judas, the amount is not only the price of slavery to greed and ambition and self-preservation, but the value of his own cheapened life.

Thirty pieces of everything. Have we exchanged our life with the Lord for something else?

Watching a movie, instead of going to Church to renew our Spirit?
Telling a lie to cover-up our sins?
Entering into questionable transactions for money?

Jesus is the only wealth we should aspire for, we should crave for. Earthly possessions and money must be used for His glory, not in betraying Him.

How are you using yours now?

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, we call ourselves Your friends yet one among us who ate at table with You betrayed You. We know that we often fail You. Transform us through Your Passion and the sufferings we merit to choose to bear for Your sake so that we may help reveal Your Glory at the appointed time. This we ask through Jesus our Lord, Your Son. Amen +

Lord, in your great love, answer me.

ORATIO IMPERATA AD PETENDAM PLUVIAM

God our loving Father, creator of our earth and of the universe, and all the wondrous elements of nature that sustain your living creatures, we humbly ask you to send us the rain that our country needs so badly at this time, to irrigate our fields, to stave off a power shortage, to provide water for our bodily health, and to refresh our parched lands. At your command the wind and the seas obey, raise your hand Almighty God to commence the normal rainy season that has now been long delayed so that crisis may be averted.

Merciful and generous God, open our eyes to the richness and beauty of your creation and instill in us a deep love for this earth and all that is in and around it. Teach us to be wise stewards of your creation so that we may always use them responsibly and protect them from abuse and exploitation. At this time of crisis, dear Lord, move us to share more, to serve more and to love more.

Loving God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you entrusted the Filipino people to the special care of Mary our Mother, listen to the prayers that we bring up to her, our Blessed Mother, to intercede for us, for the protection of our land and our people, whom she loves.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Saint Rose of Lima, pray for us.
Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, pray for us.

FORGIVE US OUR SINS (3-30-10)

Holy Tuesday

John 13:38
“Will you lay down your life for me?”
-----------------------------------------------------

It was a scene in a Cenakulo, a play about the passion and death of Christ. ‘Judas’ is about to hang himself for betraying the Lord Jesus Christ. Suddenly, a girl from the audience shouted, “Do not do it! Go to Jesus and Mama Mary and ask for forgiveness!” Silence filled the air, but the show must go on. ‘Judas” hanged himself.

Both Peter and Judas (the Iscariot) has done something unacceptable, being friends and disciples of Jesus. Peter denied Jesus three times, totally disowning that fact that he knows Him and have been with Him in His ministry. While Judas betrayed Him for thirty pieces of silver.

In the end, Judas is dead – taking his own life. But Peter is alive, and even led the first Christian Church. The difference? Repentance. Peter remained with the disciples, asked for forgiveness from the Lord and was given the Spirit to live fully under God’s love and blessings.

In this season of Lent, we are given the opportunity to reform our ways and lead a life that is in total obedience to the will of the Lord. We may have done a grave sin in our life, but this should not make us feel detached from Him. In fact, He is even reaching out to us – to repent, to ask for forgiveness and to reform our lives.

Reach out to Him for forgiveness, He is waiting.

Let us pray +

Almighty and everlasting God, we wish to see Jesus. Grant us the grace of humility during this Passion time so that we may indeed, like a grain of wheat falling into the soil, die to ourselves and thus obtain pardon of our sins. We ask this through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.
Amen +

“Denial and betrayal?
Repentance and forgiveness!.”

I will sing of your salvation.

I AM WITH YOU (3-29-10)

Holy Monday

John 12:8
“You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”
--------------------------------------------------

We all like gifts. We give gifts to friends and our loved ones. And most of the time, we give gifts that are “valuable”, meaning gifts that come from the heart, gifts that signifies true love and friendship.

Gifts that we know will make them happy. And it is this friendship that really matters most, and the money we spent is nothing compared to the love we have shown.

In today’s gospel, Mary ‘wasted’ an expensive perfume, as Judas has thought. She should have just sold the perfume and gave the money to the poor. But the Lord knows that what he speaks is not what is in his heart – “he said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions”.

Jesus just dismissed him and advised him to just leave Mary alone. Being friends of Jesus, Mary and her siblings has shown true faith in the Lord. But this time, Mary’s gesture is geared towards bringing back the friendship that the Lord has shown to them.

The expensive perfume is nothing compared to the love that Jesus has given them. Lazarus is alive because of their faith in Him. Jesus acknowledged this and received her extraordinary gesture of love with gratitude.

Be a friend to the Lord. Only then can your sacrifice be worthy to Him.

Let us pray +

Grant, we ask you, Almighty God, the grace of restoration through the merits of Jesus' Passion and Death. Today we remember the great gift of gratitude, given courageously, by Mary when she anointed our Lord with the costly oil whose perfume filled the house. May the perfume of her deed fill our hearts with praise. Amen. +

The Lord is my light and my salvation.

GLORY IN THE HIGHEST (3-28-10)

Palm Sunday

Luke 19:38
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.”
-------------------------------------------------------

The Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. And as He comes in, a very large crowd spread their cloaks, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. And as the people rejoice, Jesus most probably had mixed feelings and emotions.

Moreover, He knows that His mission is coming to an end. As such, He would be fulfilling God’s will so He may also fulfill His promise of salvation.

In that scene also, the people may have failed to notice two important figures that are with Jesus in His triumphant return. They are not His apostles. In fact, He only met them in the morning of that day.

They are no other than the ass and the colt. “Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.” He did not come in chariots dressed in elegant robe with diamond-studded crown. From His birth to His death, He remained humble and meek.

Today, we are His donkeys.

Let us lift Him up so others may see Him and accept Him in their hearts. We are His donkeys, and Jesus is the true star of the show.

In our spiritual life up to our death, we may have been an unseen figure or even forgotten by everyone, but always remember Him!

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, I would then bring back to You all the glory and praise. And I would also like to point out that in all of these, I am just a donkey that would continue carrying You around so everyone may hear, see and experience Your words and everlasting love. And I know that without You, I would just be an ordinary donkey

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

COVENANT OF PEACE (3-27-10)

Ezekiel 37:26
I will make with them a covenant of peace; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them…
--------------------------------------------------------

Before the end of every mass, we are all enjoined to say “Peace be with you” to the people around us.

And as we approach the last week of the season of Lent, we are being reminded, through the gospel readings, that peacemaking is not an optional commitment. It is a requirement of our faith.

We are called to be peacemakers, not by some movement of the moment, but by our Lord Jesus.

Jesus Christ, then, is our peace, and in his death-resurrection he gives God's peace to our world. In him God has indeed reconciled the world, made it one.

Because we have been gifted with God's peace in the risen Christ, we are called to our own peace and to the making of peace in our world. As disciples and as children of God it is our task to seek for ways in which to make the forgiveness, justice and mercy, and love of God visible in a world.

So, the next time you see a friend or an enemy, make a sign of peace… or better yet, hug him, kiss him… forgive him. Peace would always start in us for how can we ask for peace if we, ourselves, cannot even give peace.

Peace be with you!

Let us pray +

O God, you are the source of life and peace. Praised be your name forever. We know it is you who turn our minds to thoughts of peace. Hear our prayer in this time of crisis. Your power changes hearts. Strengthen our resolve to give witness to these truths by the way we live. Give to us understanding that puts an end to strife; mercy that quenches hatred, and forgiveness that overcomes vengeance. Amen +

The Lord will guard us, as a shepherd guards his flock.

BELIEVE THE WORKS (3-26-10)

John 10:38
“…believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”
-------------------------------------------------------

Even if I wear a white doctor’s uniform, hang a stethoscope over my shoulder and carry a black bag complete with medical paraphernalia, I still cannot practice medicine and treat people for I am not a graduate of any medical degree. I may look like a doctor but I am not a doctor.

Conversely, the Jews during Jesus’ time would not believe that He is the Son of God because they do not see in Him the magnificence of a King or of a God. Jesus lives a very humble life, devoid of any extravagance and lavish living. And for such a claim, they would want Him killed.

But He would want people to believe in His works, if they have a hard time accepting what He is saying.

And that works is rooted on love or charity (good works). Charity is the New Commandment (Jn 13:34). Christians feel that charity is a reflection of our faith and it helps keep us true to the saving Grace that was bestowed on us at baptism.

“Love one another as I have loved you”… is this the kind of words that would come out from a person who is NOT with God? As God is Love, so is Jesus, for He is the true manifestation of God’s love. And all His works are for the Father and from the Father.

There is no greater work done than Jesus dying for our sin. And we can do greater works, as in more abundant works, because the ministry of the Spirit is not limited to Jesus only, but now is empowering all believers.

Let us pray +

Help us to know how much we need You. Lord Jesus, embolden us for the work ahead. Provide our daily bread and forgive us all our sins. Cleanse our sins and enrich our fellowship with the saints. Clothe us in the armor of God and place us where we must stand. Grant us a fruitful harvest and an effective ministry. Amen +

In my distress I called upon the Lord, and he heard my voice.

THE LORD IS WITH YOU (3-25-10)

Solemnity of the Annunciation

Luke 1:38
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
------------------------------------------------------

THE LORD IS WITH YOU
Many times in the Old Testament the words “the Lord is with you” signaled that someone was being called to a daunting task.

In fact, these words often accompanied an invitation from God to play a crucial role in his plan of salvation. Such a divine calling generally entailed great sacrifices and challenged people to step out of their comfort zones and put their trust in God like never before.

FAVOR WITH GOD
We learn more of Mary’s mission in Luke 1:30, as the angel says, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Like the phrase “The Lord is with you,” the notion of finding “favor with God” also would bring to mind Old Testament covenant mediators in God’s salvation plan.

Noah was the first person in the Bible described as finding favor with God (see Genesis 6:8). God saved him and his family from the flood and gave him a covenant to be the head of a renewed human family.

The next person to find favor with God was Abraham (see Genesis 18:2-3). God made a covenant with him, calling on his family to be the instrument through which he would bring blessing to all the nations of the world.

Like these great covenant mediators of the Old Testament, Mary has found favor with God for God is with her. Walking in the footsteps of Noah, Abraham, Moses and David, Mary now is called to serve as an important cooperator in the divine plan to bring salvation to all the nations.

Almighty Father, You have revealed the beauty of your power by exalting the lowly virgin of Nazareth and making her the mother of our Savior. Her total obedience brought Jesus to the waiting world and filled the void of incompletion with the presence of her child, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever. Amen +

Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.

LOVE SENT (3-24-10)

2 Kings 5:13
“If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me.”
------------------------------------------------

I cannot give it directly to her, so I asked my classmate to give it. It was a “love letter”, telling the girl of my dream how I like her. One way or another, all of us have given a love letter or have received one. And the one who receives this love letter should feel loved, though, the feeling may not be mutual.

And our Father has given us more than just a love letter. He showed His love to us by giving us His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. It was not just a way of saying that He likes us, but a way of telling the whole world that He truly loves us. And because of this love, Jesus has given up His life so that we may be saved.

Have you accepted God’s “love letter”? Have you read it, understood it, put it in your heart and continue to live it?

We should feel very loved. We cannot say that the feeling is not mutual once we receive God’s love. I do pray that your heart will be similarly stirred as well. But I also pray that this will be the start of a life-long love affair with God's Word, as the expression of all He is and will be for you in you and through you, throughout eternity.

God loves you. God loves all of us. And Jesus Christ is very true manifestation of that love. More than just a love letter, but His Son dying for our sins so we may be with our Father again in heaven.

Let us pray +

Teach me to love, Lord, as You love, make it unconditional, honest, and kind. To ask nothing back in return, Lord. To encompass the whole of mankind. Make my love for others be greater by far than any love that is offered to me, led by the Spirit, inspired of God, as forgiving as Jesus...true love, forever and ever…and free. Amen +

Glory and praise for ever!

I AM (3-23-10)

John 8:24
“For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.”
---------------------------------------------

When Moses encountered God for the first time through a burning bush, God introduced Himself as “I AM”. And in today’s Gospel, Jesus repeat this phrase “I AM”. He is communicating to them that he is the same I AM that Moses met at the burning bush which commissioned him.

He likened His death to what happened centuries ago in the time of Moses. When the nation of Israel was invaded by fiery serpents, God told Moses to raise a brass serpent on a pole. Everyone that looked at the serpent lifted up on the pole was healed.

And people once gain believed that God is alive.

And in the new testament, it was Jesus who was lifted up. He was crucified, suffered and died so our sins may be forgiven. Jesus had to be lifted up on the cross so that he could heal us of our sins.

Just as the brass serpent was raised on the pole for the healing of Israel, so Jesus was raised on the cross for the healing of the world.

Over the years, God has shown us time after time how He has His hand on us: whether it was his protecting hand, his healing hand, or his strengthening hand. We must always walk in faith. We have seen God perform his wonders in our life so many times, that we learn to trust him along the way.

In this season of Lent, let our hearts accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. And as the Father has sent Him, He is sending us to share His love to the rest of the world.

Let us pray +

Lord Jesus, when I look at You on that cross, may I be like Nicodemus in understanding and believing You. You were lifted up on that cross for us. You were lifted up on that cross to heal us from all our sins. We believe in You for You alone is the Lord, our salvation, the giver of eternal life.

O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you.

LOVE CONNECTION (3-22-10)

John 8:19
Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
------------------------------------------------

My name has a suffix – Jr. that stands for “Junior”. This could mean that I have the same name as my Father. And since birth, my friends and relatives would know me by my nick name “Jun”. And the name, “Roberto”, will be my connection with my father. I will be known as the son of Roberto.

Jesus and God the Father also has that special connection. In fact, that connection was so perfect and so loving that it entailed a sacrifice so we may be saved and have that opportunity to be with God forever.

And through His public life, Jesus would always respect this love connection. Jesus would pray, seek and obey the will of the Father. And the Father would continuously love Jesus, His son whom He is so well pleased.

And that connection with the Father is given to us by Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father but through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Give freely that which has been freely given to us and the connection shall grow stronger. Every effort you put forth to aid in the great work that the Father has asked us to do, aids us in strengthening our connection; for then we are doing the will of our Father.

Be a part of that love connection. God the Father, Son and Spirit. We are the ones to come closer into the knowledge of the Father, the Knowledge of the Father that will ever guide us right as we reach for and seek Him fully.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, let me be a part of Your love connection. Let me believe fully in Your Son and my Lord, Jesus Christ. Let me never fear the challenges of life. Let me trust in You! Amen +

Though I walk in the dark valley, I fear no evil; for you are at my side.

REDEMPTION IN ACTION (3-21-10)

Fifth Sunday of Lent

John 8:7
“Let the one among you who is without sin the first to throw a stone at her.”
---------------------------------------------------

It is said that when we point a finger to a person, three of our fingers are pointing back to us. This only mean that before we throw any accusations to someone, seek what is in your heart first.

Are we doing this because we want that person to change? Or are we doing this so we can exalt ourselves so others may see us far greater than the other?

In today’s gospel, the mob is yearning for blood. Not for the blood of the woman accused of adultery, but for the blood of Jesus. They want Jesus to say the “right” words, so they would have the reason to arrest Him.

But they cannot simply do that. Jesus spoke a word they had not expected. It was a heaven-sent word. It was a word rooted in truth and a word that struck their very soul. They knew they were not sinless.

In fact, only Jesus could have thrown the first stone, for He is sinless. But that is not His purpose for coming to this world. His purpose is to forgive and make others see God through Him.

For a brief moment, righteousness triumphed over hatred and self-importance. Those who were younger followed their example, leaving the woman protected and safe with Jesus.

Redemption in action.

The Gospel portrayed before our very eyes. Jesus takes the hate of hell and our own sin and turns back the foe, leaving us safe and in his presence.

Let us pray +

Lord Jesus, thank you! The words seem so shallow and so small before your expansive grace. Use me to be a conduit of that grace to others. All glory to you, O Father who reigns above all, and to you, Lord Jesus, for you have triumphed over sin and death to rescue me. Amen.

The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

OUR SHIELD (3-20-10)

Psalms 7:11
A shield before me is God, who saves the upright of heart…
------------------------------------------------

Our enemies are our sins.

All sin is the devil's work, though he usually uses the flesh and the world as his instruments. Sin means inviting the devil in. We are first tempted and then we give in, and we do it.

So, how can we win against our enemies? Knowing we are at war is the first requirement for winning it. The next thing we must do to win a war is to know our enemy.

St. Paul says that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. Our true battle is not against our political opponents or co-workers or neighbors or any other human agencies.

The battle is not against people, but against unseen spiritual powers. In fact, the entire human race is under a vicious assault by certain principalities and powers, world rulers of darkness, wicked spirits in high places. Every man, every woman, every child, everywhere is a target of the enemy.

God has issued to each of us a call to war.

It is a call to us to be men and women of God, to fight the good fight, to stand fast in the faith. Our weapons are through God’s power and might.

Put on the whole armor of God through prayer and living our lives daily by faith, shielding ourselves with the truth and righteousness. The army of darkness is real, active and working day and night. The devil is our enemy.

This is war. Are you ready to fight for the army of the Light?

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, strengthen in our hearts the certainty that final victory is reserved not for other acts of hatred but for acts of love. Teach me to bow in humility before Your Word. Amen +

O Lord, my God, in you I take refuge.

A LOVING DAD (3-19-10)

Matthew 1:20
“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.”
-----------------------------------------------

Your wife came to you one evening. She told you that she is 2-month pregnant. You were ecstatic and even jumped for joy.

Then, she said that you are not the Father, but some other guy. In fact, it was the Holy Spirit. What will you do? What will you think? Would you believe her? Would you say goodbye and leave her?

St. Joseph actually thought of leaving Mary at that time. Not because he felt cheated, but because “since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly”. During that time, a woman accused of adultery will be put to death by stoning. And here is his wife, pregnant, and no one has ever touched her in the first place.

Yet, he changed his mind, after a dream. He took Mary as his wife, took care of her and Jesus. They lived in Nazareth, where Jesus grew up strong in body and spirit and have been very obedient to His parents.

What a great privilege it was given to St. Joseph. He was a mere carpenter, and ordinary man. Yet, he was given the opportunity to be the earthly father of Jesus, calling him “Papa”, “Father”, “Tatay”, “Daddy”.

What a great privilege of being called “Papa” by no other than the Lord, himself. And all along, he remained humble. He remained obedient to the will of the Lord, letting Jesus grow in spirit, totally being under God’s love and glory.

Lord Jesus, I need your special care. Like your earthly father, Joseph, I want to do God's will, even if I may not always understand. Make me gentle and selfless in the care of my family and children; help me guide them in the toils and troubles, the happiness and wonders of this life.

“How could a father's task be done
Unless he remembered his children were created
By a loving, wise and merciful God.”

The son of David will live for ever.

MY TESTIMONY (3-18-10)

John 5:31-32
Jesus said to the Jews: “If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is not true. But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true.”
--------------------------------------------------

In a court of law, merely saying that you did not do it or testifying on your behalf may not be a strong proof of your innocence. All you say must be corroborated by at least one person or you need to have an alibi so the court may believe that you are not guilty.

So, although a lot have been written about Jesus and thousands of testimonies on His behalf, why do we still question whether He is really the Son of God, whether He really existed?

We would remain unbeliever to the end because of the hardness of our heart.

How about doing it the other way around? How about instead of questioning His “authenticity”, why not start living a life committed to His word, and testify on His behalf?

For what is harder – proving that He does not exist, or accepting Him as our Lord and living a life in Him so others may also believe?

So, how do I deal with the greatest, most exciting news in the world—the fact that God loves me so much that His Son died for me to take away my sin and gifted me to share in His resurrection to eternal life?

Do you just keep silent, or do you share that joy and testify to a life with Jesus?

God is inviting us to experience His love through the life, works and words of Jesus. Accept Jesus as your Savior and testify to life.

Let us pray +

Help me, Lord, to boldly proclaim the revelation of who you are “to the ends of the earth” (Is. 49:6). Amen +

Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.

YOUR WILL BE DONE (3-17-10)

John 5:30
“I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.”
----------------------------------------------

It is the same as the other days. But this time, seems like I do not want to get up early. I simply want to go back to sleep. I am not tired or lack sleep, I just don’t want to do anything that morning. The spirit is willing but the body is not.

Most of the time, we feel the same in our spiritual lives. We do not want to do our morning and evening prayers; or we miss going to mass or we tend to be slow in meeting our commitments to our company, families and friends.

We feel that we are detached from God and not willing to do what He wants us to achieve spiritually and physically.

But like Jesus, we need to follow the will of the Father. Let His will be done in our lives.

God's will in heaven is nothing other than an invitation into an embrace of love. Joy in the form of love, healing in the form of love, faith in the form of love. God's will in heaven is love.

We know what we are supposed to do. We have all the answers that we will ever need to live a God-fearing, purpose-filled life of abundance and prosperity.

Know His will, obey His will, live your life according to His will.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, Your will be done. Teach us to follow and obey Your will for You are the only One we can trust. May we forever live our lives according to Your will. 'Your will be done on earth as in heaven’, may that be the call that echoes within us, and when we respond to it, our souls are set free from every constraint as we bring heaven to earth. Amen +

The Lord is gracious and merciful.

GET WELL (3-16-10)

John 5:6
“Do you want to be well?”
---------------------------------------------

I am not really into taking medicines whenever I don’t feel well. I would just take a rest, a drink lots of water or juice and vitamins. But, sometimes, instead of getting better, it would get worse – I will cough more frequently, my body temperature will go up, and I will have a chilling sensation.

Being sick is no fun! And yet, we do sometimes get sick. Maybe we shook hands with a friend, but didn’t know that he was coming down with the flu. Or we may have eaten something that is contaminated, so we go down with stomach ache or diarrhea.

However, there are cases wherein we get sick because of something we do to our body.

Smoking cigarettes, eating fatty foods, drinking alcohol or softdrinks (sugar), and worst, taking prohibited drugs.

In such case, our sickness is brought about by our sins – this is called the sin of addictions.

The results of that sin can make us sick, hurt us, or even kill us. And sadly, when we sin, sometimes others around us can be hurt or killed as well.

Do you want to get well from your addictions? Then receive the spiritual healing that God is offering us. Accept Him as your Lord, recognize yourself as a sinner, and repent from your sins.

Accept His invitation for you to be well – in mind, body and spirit.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, we acknowledge that we are helpless to change our lives in our own power. Transform our addictions, Lord; make them into a holy addiction to you. Let all our appetites bring us into greater dependence on you. Heal us and make us well. Amen +

The Lord of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob.

BELIEVE AND LIVE (3-15-10)

John 4:50
The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.
------------------------------------------------

From Kerygma - (by Judith Concepcion)

Once there was a seed. God said to him, “You may appear to be tiny and insignificant but in due time, you will become a huge plant. But you have to fulfill certain conditions before this will come to pass. You have to allow yourself to be buried in soil and be exposed to rain, wind and sunshine.”

The seed wasn’t happy with what he heard for he didn’t want to get dirty and wet and bear the sun’s heat.

The seed disobeyed God. He hid himself from human hands.

He waited.

Months, years and decades passed but nothing happened.
He remained just a seed.

In today’s Gospel, we witnessed how the royal official’s faith grew. First, he believed that Jesus could heal his son. Second, he believed that Jesus would do what He claimed. Third, he and his whole family believed in Jesus.

Faith must be used in order for it to grow. It’s not enough that we believe that Jesus can help us with our concerns.

We need to show that in our actions. How’s your faith? Do you live as though Jesus can do what He says?

Let us pray +

“Lord, I believe that You are healing and touching me now, right now, in the hiddenness of my room, and through the anointing of Your Word that I welcome with faith and humility. Amen.”

I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.

LET US CELEBRATE (3-14-10)

Fourth Sunday of Lent

Luke 15:22-23
‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’
-----------------------------------------------------

When we hear the story of the Prodigal Son in the Bible, we always talk about the lost son or the son that stayed.

We seldom talk about the father who has waited and waited for the return of his son.

The Prodigal Son is a reality for many of us. In the journey of life, we soon realize there are no guarantees as Christian parents. No matter how hard we strive to teach our children about God and His Word, and no matter how often we pray for our children to discover Jesus Christ and His message of salvation, some decide to reject it all!

Even in those families where God is loved, trusted and glorified, children sometimes rebel and run from their roots!

And so the more that we must place the care of our family under the hands of God, praying always that no harm will fall on them.

Be in constant prayer, always lead by example, and follow through with love and grace, no matter how despairing things get. Remember God's promise to those who raise children in a Christian home:

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

Let us pray +

Help Me give my children the best... not of trappings or toys, but of myself, cherishing them on good days and bad, theirs and mine. Teach Me to accept them for who they are, not for what they do. Above all, let me ground these children so well that I can dare to let them go. And may they be so blessed.

Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

HAVE MERCY ON US (3-13-10)

Luke 18:13
‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’
-----------------------------------------------

The Pharisee and the tax collector. Both of them went to the temple to pray. Both of them called on to God and thanked Him.

And so what is the difference between how they prayed, such that the latter was exalted in heaven and went home justified and forgiven.

Humility…

There were few people among the Jews in those days who were as despised as the publicans, the tax collectors. They were regarded as traitors who worked for a foreign power to extract money from their own people. Very often they were corrupt, taking more money than they should.

And he knows the condition of his heart… and he begged for mercy.

He places himself in the front ranks of sinners – the worst of the worst – the sinner, and he lays before God in complete humility that awareness.

The publican does not reel off a litany of his sins, as the Pharisee unfolds his virtues. He just says to God that he is a sinner and asks for God’s mercy.

No one can repent for us, we can only do that ourselves.

It is our own heart we must turn towards God, and we can only do so with God’s help. It is our own soul, itself a gift from God, that we must place in the care of God, through the constant assistance of His Holy Spirit. Pray, then, with al humility… God be merciful to me, a sinner.

Let us pray +

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. God be merciful to me a sinner. God, cleanse me of my sins and have mercy on me. Thou has created me; Lord, have mercy on me. I have sinned immeasurably; Lord, forgive me. God be merciful to me a sinner. Amen +

It is mercy I desire, and not sacrifice.

HE IS THE ONE (3-12-10)

Mark 12:32
“He is One and there is no other than He.”
--------------------------------------------

A little boy is telling his Grandma how "everything" is going wrong. School, family problems, severe health problems, etc...

Meanwhile, his Grandma is baking a cake. She asks her grandson if he would like a snack, which of course he does.

"Here, have some cooking oil." "Yuck" says the boy. "How about a couple raw eggs?" "Gross, Grandma!" "Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?" "Grandma, those are all yucky!"

To which Grandma replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!”

God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good!

We just have to trust in Him and, eventually, He will all make these into something wonderful!

He is are a wonderful God. And He has created wonderful things – including you and me. Yet, we fail to recognize that.

He sees what it is best for us and will continue to bless those who sincerely devote themselves for His glory and praise.

Let us pray +

Oh Lord, help us to do our best in serving You and others. Teach us how to do better and more wonderful things in Your name. Give us energy and cheerfulness that may help us to bring into our lives the loving ministry of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen +

I am the Lord your God: hear my voice.

BE WITH HIM (3-11-10)

Luke 11:23
“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.”
----------------------------------------------

The recent Mexico project in which I was involved is a big one compared to whatever I have handled before. It involves refurbishing 110 thousand square feet of office and manufacturing space, moving around 500 pieces of equipment and mobilizing hundreds of people in fourteen months.

Therefore, even at the start, teamwork is the key. We should work together, plan together and execute together. There will be disagreements, but in the end, a team consensus will prevail.

Whoever disagrees can leave the team and do something else.

And in our spiritual journey, the same is expected from us by Jesus. We should always be with Him and not against Him. Whoever disagrees can leave the team and be with someone else (and that someone else can only be Satan himself).

When you share yourself in relationship with Jesus, when you talk to him often and call out to Him in faith, He will reward you by giving you more of Himself. Being with Him takes courage, and it takes time. Held back by our fears, we can move beyond them only through the encouragement of the Holy Spirit.

Gradually you will sense that Jesus is there, listening to your prayers, answering through Scripture and promptings in your heart. And you will surely feel in your heart that something wonderful is happening.

Let us pray +

God, our Father, You redeemed us and made us Your children in Christ. Through Him You have saved us from death and given us Your Divine life of grace. By becoming more like Jesus on earth, may I come to share His glory in Heaven. Give me the peace of Your kingdom, which this world does not give. Amen +

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

BUT TO FULFILL (3-10-10)

Matthew 5:17
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
----------------------------------------------------

In today’s gospel, the law Jesus is talking about, of course, is the law that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai: the Ten Commandments.

These laws are still valid today. And they will always be valid because they are part of the natural law, the conditions necessary for human beings to live together in society in peace and in justice.

The Jews in His time thought that He is abolishing these laws of Moses. But He is very explicit in saying that He is not. Rather, he is fulfilling them.

And how?

First, is through love. We follow the laws not because they are laws. We follow them because we want to show our love for God and our neighbors. And it is the indissoluble bond between the love of God and love of self and neighbor that is the key to making love the fulfillment of the law.

Secondly, is through Himself. He is the fulfillment of the promise of God of freeing us from the destruction caused by sin. Jesus is the personification of love and the fulfillment of the law. Jesus is both the fullest expression of the love of God for us, and the fullest expression of the human response to that love. As God is Love, and so Jesus is the manifestation of that love.

The whole content of Christianity can be expressed in one word, Jesus. When you’ve said Jesus you’ve said it all.

And the very essence of being a Christian is to have an intimate personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us pray +

O my God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because you are all good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me and I ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen +

He has strengthened …your gates… blessed your children within you.

IN TRUTH, GUIDE ME (3-09-10)

Psalms 25:5
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior.
----------------------------------------------

I was watching the game show, “Family Feud” (Philippines edition), when a question was asked – “Based on 100 people surveyed, name a book in the house that is being read the LEAST.” And do you know the number one answer based on survey? Yes, you are right – it is the “Bible”.

And I would say that in some houses, the Bible is NOT being read anymore.

And then, we would have the guts to tell our friends that we are at a lost in life. That we have too many problems to handle. That it looks like God is not taking care of us. That God (or destiny) is punishing is so we are experiencing too much sufferings.

For we are like Pontius Pilate asking Jesus, “What is the truth?”, when in fact, the truth is already in front of us. And all we need is to read about it, accept it, live it and share it.

Knowing God is essential for Christians. A relationship with Him with close interaction is what life is all about. Hearing God's voice and knowing His presence daily can take your Christian experience to the highest level.

The Bible reveals to us the way for us to hear God's voice and to know Him better. Through prayer, study, truth and intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ all Christians can know God better when they know how to listen to Him with their spirits.

Open your Bible today; read about the truth. Read about a life so worth-living that someone died for it so we can all have eternal life with God.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, from this day forward, I seek Your Truth and whatever it may look like. I trust You and Your Divine Plan. Protect me Father and help me to always speak the Truth and to purposefully move away from omissions, lies and anything that is not a deliberate reflection of Your Truth. Through the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen +

Remember your mercies, O Lord.

WASH AND BE CLEAN (3-08-10)

2 Kings 5:13
“Wash and be clean…”
---------------------------------------------

The Philippines is experiencing severe drought again in key agricultural areas due to the El Nino phenomenon. And the drought is expected to continue through this summer months so everyone is advised to save water.

We are all dependent on water. First is to hydrate our body. In fact, our body is 75% water. It has been shown that if you lose just 2.5% of your body weight from water loss, you will loose 25% of your efficiency.

Secondly is to clean our body. Water is a universal solvent and can dissolve more things than any other substance. And as we need to clean our physical body, we also need to do some cleaning of the inside.

Sometimes we care more about what we look like than what is in our heart. It is definitely a good thing to take a bath and be clean. But it is a lot more important that we are clean on the inside, in our hearts.

The Bible tells us that we all have done things that have made us unclean and dirty before God. These things separate us from Him. God loves us and made a way for us to be clean and pure.

God sent His Son, Jesus, to help us. Jesus lived a life that was clean and pure. He never sinned at all. When He died on the cross, He died for all the sins that we have done. He died for us!

When we ask Jesus to forgive our sins and come into our heart, He washes away our sins and gives us a clean heart! Let His blood wash you.

Let us pray +

Lord Jesus, I come before You just as I am. I am sorry for all my sins. I repent of my sins, please forgive me. Irenounce Satan, the evil spirits and all their works. I give You my entire self, Lord Jesus, now and forever. I accept You as my Lord, God and Saviour. Heal me, change me, strengthen me in body, soul and spirit. Come Lord Jesus, cover me with Your Precious Blood and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Amen +

Athirst is my soul for the living God.

CULTIVATE THE HEART (3-07-10)

Third Sunday of Lent

Luke 13:5
“But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!”
----------------------------------------

It was a simple experiment during my elementary days. I placed a piece of cotton in a glass tumbler. Then put some water, then finally, I put some bean seeds (the “munggo” type). My teacher even advised us to put it near a sun-lighted place and do not forget to water regularly.

After a day or two, sprouts would come out of the seeds signifying presence of life in the seeds. However, it will not continue to grow and would wither eventually.

Why? Because the nutrient in a cotton is not enough to sustain its growth. It must be planted in rich soil that can provide the needed nutrient.

Is your heart made of cotton? Do you invite God at the start with excitement and enthusiasm but along the way, it simply go away? You go back to your old self and forgot God totally.

We all need to cultivate the Word of God in a heart of rich soil. Read about His Words and practice them in your life. Live a life of prayer, totally surrendering your life to Him. And be obedient to Him, totally trusting in His will.

Then, you will grow in Him. You will not wither but have eternal life as we await the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. In this season of Lent, rediscover your true calling, and cultivate your heart so God may live in there forever.

Let us pray +

Dear Lord, I pray for Your continued divine care in my time of special need. Please heal my heart, Or Lord. Give knowledge and strength to those who administer to me. Lead their hands and fill their hearts with Your inspiration and love. May we continue to grow in love with You until we meet You in heaven with the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen +

The Lord is kind and merciful.

TWO SONS (3-06-10)

Luke 15:32
It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
--------------------------------------------

The first time I learned about the story of the “prodigal son” was through my father. We were walking back home at that time when he asked me and my brother, “so what is the gospel today all about?” We were not able to respond immediately.

Actually, I don’t even know what or how to respond. I have not been listening at that time, maybe busy thinking of what to do when we get back home. That is when he patiently related to me the story.

Two sons… both were lost. Although the eldest one remained with the father, his heart is away from him. The youngest may be away physically for a long time, but he learned how to repent and be with his father forever.

Two sons… both were lost. But what is important to God is forgiveness that we ask… not the empty presence that we show. Are you lost? Go back to Him and repent.

And from then on, I would always be listening attentively during gospel-reading and to the sermon. I was a prodigal son, that has came to know and found the real meaning of being a Christian. And I do really thank You, Oh God for making my father the instrument in revealing your love to me.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, You have shown the “love that never gives up”. I would sometimes choose the wrong way as I live through life. But it is You who even constantly seek for me so I may return back to the right path. A patient love… a love full of forgiveness. Lord God, help me to grow in my ability to love You fully and all of my brothers and sisters around me. Amen +

“I left you And lived on my own.
But you patiently looked for me and made me Your own. ”

The Lord is kind and merciful.

BEING AND BEARING (3-05-10)

Matthew 21:43
“Therefore, I say to you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you
and given to a people that will produce its fruit.”
--------------------------------------------

“Are we bearing fruit for the kingdom of God? Is our Christian love real and active, something that inspires others, or is it just words and mere talk?”

I heard this during one Sunday’s homily. And it struck me really hard. Do I just write and write this devotion everyday just to write it?

Or am I writing this to inspire others and let them know the love of God through me? I do receive a response or two that they do read and being inspired by it, but how about the others?

Being a Christian is still far from being a fruit-bearing Christian. We can always read the Bible, attend Sunday masses and bible studies, and that would be a good start.

But we cannot just do that for the rest of our lives.

We need have Jesus in the centre of our lives holding us together. Jesus asks us to make our home in him so that we can bear fruit. Share the blessings, share the words, share ourselves.

Are we bearing fruit for the kingdom of God? Is our Christian love real and active or just words and mere talk? Be a fruit-bearing Christian today.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, teach us that “our love is not to be just words or mere talk,
but something real and active; only by this can we be certain that we are the children of the truth…” Amen +

Remember the marvels the Lord has done.

GUILTY DOING NOTHING (3-04-10)

Luke 16:29
“They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.”
-----------------------------------------------------

When you steal, you committed a sin. When you lust or covet another man’s wife, it is a grave sin. How about seeing a person in pain, lying on the street and instead of helping, you just go your way. Is it a sin? Or seeing someone hungry and yet you do nothing?

Sad to say, but yes… you could be committing the sin of omission.

The “sin of omission” is defined as the willful neglect or positive refusal to perform some good action that one's conscience urges one to do. Its gravity depends on the importance of what should have been done, on the person's willfulness, and the circumstances of the situation.

Our relationship with God is not only one of being aware of what evil we do, but also being aware of the good we don't do. The good things we are called to do are not to be done only when it is convenient for us, but at all times.

In today’s gospel, the rich man was thrown to hell NOT because he maltreated Lazarus, but rather, since he did not do anything to alleviate the poor man’s suffering and pain. The rich man, as he saw the beggar starving at his doorstep and could easily have reached out to him and helped Lazarus to become well again.

What we fail to do can make us just as guilty as what we do. A sin is a wrong choice, and to decide not to do something is just as much of a choice as to decide to do something.

Let us pray +

I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen +

Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

MY GOD (3-03-10)

Psalms 31:15
But my trust is in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.”
--------------------------------------------

My recent long-term assignment away from home and my family has really tested by faith and belief in God. There were days when I would question the things coming my way. And there are days when that question is not being answered – or so I thought.

And as the day goes by, the answer becomes very clear. It may not be the answer that I expected, for it is more than what I expected.

Things are not always clear for us either and it can seem that we are lost in the wilderness. Faith — trust in God — is spiritual radar that will guide us onward and home.

Everything that we do will be through the power of God, for it is God’s show and not ours. But we have to accept that gift and allow ourselves to be led by it. The fact that Jesus abolished death and grants us immortality should set us free from the self-preserving fear that governs our lives.

This grants us the freedom to love and to serve without being overwhelmed by the usual human feeling of vulnerability. For God will see guide you through it and succeed.

That is why a constant turning to God in prayer is vital for healing. And for those who remain too broken and wounded to pray for themselves, they must rely on their brothers and sisters in Christ to pray in their stead.

Restore someone's ability to trust. God will bless you for it.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, how me how much you love me and save me according to your promise. Then I can answer those who insult me because I trust in your word. Then I can live fully without fear under Your great love and mercy because my faith is in You, for I trust in Your word. Amen +

Save me, O Lord, in your kindness.

FATHER IN HEAVEN (3-02-10)

Matthew 23:9
… you have but one Father in heaven.
------------------------------------------

Throughout our lives, we try to learn something, if not, everything. As a baby, we try to learn to walk and to talk. As little kids, we learn how to read as we learn the ABC’s.

Then there are the elementary days and the high school years – all dedicated to learning and gaining new knowledge. Up to now, we need to read and read and read, gaining the knowledge and experience we need to survive.

And once we have all the knowledge we want, then what? How about knowing God? How about spending some of your time understanding Who He is? Not only can anyone of us know the Lord and the Creator of everything that exists. He even invites - even urges - each one of us, to know Him intimately, personally and deeply.

Those who genuinely desire to know Him (as He really is) are never disappointed. In fact, knowing God is the easiest thing in the world, easier than “one plus one” or “what is the next letter after A.”

Start knowing God. And know Him more as we pursue the knowledge of the LORD. Repent and believe in the gospel. He is our Savior, worthy of our praise and worship.

1. Recognize that you are a sinner.
2. Recognize that Jesus Christ died in the cross for you.
3. Repent of your sins.
4. Accept Jesus as your Savior.

Almighty Father, may You give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation so we may know You more. Enlighten our eyes, understanding fully that all knowledge came from and existed within You. Provide us with the gift of discretion to prudently apply the knowledge we received thereby ensuring the fulfillment of Your Will. Amen +

To the upright I will show the saving power of God.

VIRTUES (3-01-10)

Daniel 9:10
…to live by the law you gave us through your servants the prophets.
---------------------------------------------

From Didache: Our teachers were very innovative in their efforts to lighten their workloads. For example, the task of correcting numerous homeworks, seatworks and quizzes was greatly simplified by the practice of “exchanging notebooks or papers” with our seatmates.

The right answers were read by the teacher, and we took on the responsibility of checking our seatmate’s work. Later, we were evenasked to check our own seatworks and quizzes and, in the end, tally our own scores and grades.

Looking back now, I realize that those practices did not only lighten the teacher’s work. Those practices also developed in us the appreciation of the value of honesty — to others, and most especially to self. This last one proves to be the most challenging.

There were instances when one would be tempted to quickly right a wrong answer, most especially when that one answer spelled the difference between passing or failing the exam.

Jesus’ teachings today underscore this: hard and challenging as it may seem, values and virtues do begin with oneself. We can read, listen to, and learn about moral and spiritual disciplines from books, and from other people’s testimonies.

However, to truly live moral and spiritual uprightness, the measures should flow from a personal and interior conviction. No outside measures and pressures can effect goodness that lasts.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, Direct Your Spirit of honesty upon me, that by soul may always remain stainless. Guide my daily thoughts, words and actions, to join those living by the Spirit of truth. For honesty yields harmony and loyalty, enriching all human relationships. Amen +

Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins.
