WE ARE SINNERS

Luke 5:32
“I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”
-----------------------------------------------

“Birds of the same feather, flock together”. We always try to be careful in choosing our friends or companions. As much as possible, we want them to be equal or maybe better than us. We do this because we do not want to be called a friend of a thief, or of an addict. We try to as much as possible, carry our names with dignity and pride.

But Jesus is different. He even eats with sinners, like tax collectors and prostitutes. The Pharisees assumed that if a person ate with sinners, that person was a sinner, too. Levi was a Jew who worked for the Roman government. He was a tax collector. Tax collectors were reknowned for their dishonesty. If that were not bad enough, they were also ritually unclean. They rubbed shoulders with gentiles. Their clothing touched the unclean garments of gentiles. Their dishes and eating utensils weren’t purified. Naturally, using our flawed human logic, since Jesus and His disciples ate with such people, Jesus and his disciples were unclean, too. He ate not only with tax collectors, He ate with sinners in general.

But God’s philosophy should be at work, not ours. We all know that Jesus did this because He wants them to feel the love of God more. He wants them to see that the mercy and forgiveness of God is not only for the just and the “pure” but also for those who will seek His love and forgiveness. The salvation that Jesus offered is for all. But He gave it first to those who are poor in spirits – for He “did not come to call the righteous, but sinners”. And that simple act of humility has earned Levi the promise of Heaven. Levi got up and followed him. Levi found righteousness in the Son of God. Levi made no assumptions. He saw, he listened, and he believed. He trusted the One sent from God because he trusted God.

May we, too, live by faith, and not by assumption. We are sinners - spend more time with Him, let us follow Him and earn the promise of Heaven.

Almighty Father, Your Word is life to me and health to my spirit. Jesus Christ is my Lord and I'm a product of His love. I have joy, I have peace. Knowing that I am a sinner, so I seek His love more. Amen +

Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth.

FASTING

Mark 6:56
“The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
-----------------------------------------------

Today is the first Friday of the Lenten Season. And on all Fridays of Lent, everyone is enjoined to do fasting. Fasting is the most powerful spiritual discipline of all the Christian disciplines. However, remembering that fasting is a form of penance and self-denial, it must be kept in mind that we are urged to do this during the entire season of Lent, but it does not have to be a fast from food on all those forty days. There are many other ways in which we can show God how sorry we are for our sins. Among them are the following: being generous with others, visiting the sick and lonely, feeding the poor, studying Scripture, making the Stations of the Cross, praying the rosary, practicing self-control, and many others.

The prophet Isaiah was clear on this when he exclaimed (Isaiah 58:6-8):

This, rather, is the fasting that I wish:

Releasing those bound unjustly,
Untying the thongs of the yoke;
Setting free the oppressed,
Breaking every yoke;
Sharing your bread with the hungry,
Sheltering the oppressed and the homeless;
Clothing the naked when you see them,
And not turning your back on your own.

Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
And your wound shall quickly be healed;
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer,
You shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!

Almighty Father, we observe fasting out of love for You and not because we have to, and also to give us an opportunity to deny ourselves in other ways. Every Friday is a day to prepare for Sunday – the day that, for us who believe, is Easter every week of the year. For Sunday is never a day of fasting. Rather, it is the glorious Day of the Lord!

“I fast not because I want others to see
Rather, because I want to be what the Lord wants me to be.”

A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.

PEER PRESSURE

Psalms 1:1-2
Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked… But delights in the law of the LORD and meditates on His law day and night.
-------------------------------------------

Drunkenness, smoking, watching pornography, committing adultery, having relationship with a woman other than your wife. Sometimes, it would really be our own decision why we did it. BUT, most of the time, we committed these grave sins because of peer pressure. And the truth is, you can't escape it – it is everywhere! Whether it is pressure to conform to a group norm or pressure to act a certain way peer pressure is something everybody has to deal with at some time in their life. How successfully you handle peer pressure depends a great deal on how you feel about yourself and your place in the world.

The Bible have repeatedly talked about the wicked ways the men would rather choose than following the will of God through His words and teachings. And most of the time, we did it because we were following the ways of another wicked man. And as we do it repeatedly, it then becomes the norm – it becomes the standard way of living - which is really very unfortunate. God can deliver us from temptation and negative peer pressure if we pray for it. And if temptation does present itself to you, say “no” quickly and get away from the difficulty.

When peer pressure rears its ugly head, try to focus on how you feel about what is happening rather than going with crowd. Always stand up for what you think is right. And the Bible is clear on what is right – “delight in the law of the LORD and meditate on His law day and night”. And then exert your own pressure to them. Show them the way to right, Godly living. Stand your ground and show them that going with the Lord is the right way. In fact, IT IS THE ONLY WAY!

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, I constantly face peer pressure – in my work, at home and at play. Please guard my heart and my life and let my life be examples to other – to resist violence, cigarettes, drugs, scandals and alcohol – so I may become the person You want me to be. This I pray through the name of Jesus. Amen +

Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

DUST TO DUST

Ash Wednesday

Matthew 16:17-18
“But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”
-----------------------------------------

I still remember Ash Wednesdays when I was a kid. After being imposed with the ash-cross on my forehead, I would really be very careful so that the cross will not be “erased” as I go through my school classes, lunch, jeepney rides to and from the school. When my forehead perspires, I would really be careful in wiping them out, ensuring that the ash remains.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Lenten Season. And in the next forty days (or forty-six, it became forty because the Sundays are removed when counting the days), Christians will be observing repentance, abstinence or fasting.

The ashes imposed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday are a reminder of our unworthiness and sinfulness that corrupts and stains us and leads to death (we return to the dust from whence we came). Ashes remind us of our original sin and our need of redemption our need to be cleansed of sin and made worthy of Salvation. When we wear the ashes on our heads, we also acknowledge the sacrifice of Christ, who forever substituted His own death for the "burnt offerings" made by Old Testament priests to atone for the sins of the people.

And long after the ashes on our foreheads were gone, may our hearts always remember the sacrifice that Jesus had done for the atonement of our sins. Always remember that not the ritual, but the truth of your heart, can earn you blessings from God.

Almighty Father, protect us in our struggle against evil. In this holy season, help us to turn our minds and hearts back to you. Lead us into sincere repentance and renew our lives with your grace. May this season of repentance bring us the blessing of Your forgiveness and the gift of light.

“Ashes on our forehead, Your sacrifice we remember;
Unworthy, we are sinners, in You we believe, life forever.”

Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.

CHILDLIKE HUMILITY

Mark 6:56
“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but the One who sent Me.”
------------------------------------------------

She looked at me straight in the eye. This little girl of about 10 years offered me her sampaguita garland while my car is stuck in traffic. I do not normally buy garlands for the car, but that time, I felt something weird. I opened the car window and asked her how much. I did not remember anymore how much. I just gave her the money and she gave me a few garlands. I immediately saw her cross the street and gave the money to a lady, maybe her mother. Afterwhich, she went back selling garlands.

They litter the street of Metro Manila. They are called “streetchildren”. They either sell something or just beg for money or food. But what is striking to note is that their mother or father is just out there, waiting for them to give them the money. They may have a thousand reasons why they do this to their children, and we are in no way to judge them. However, seeing those children roam the street, inhaling polluted air and braving the heat of the sun would make you wonder – do they deserve such harsh punishment. They, that Jesus considers as the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And that is basically the reason why they are the greatest.

Children are true picture of humility. Yes, the little child beautifully epitomized the godly quality of humility. And Jesus’ point is clear. All of us must cultivate childlike humility if we are to inherit God’s Kingdom. True Christians seek to serve, not to exercise power. No matter how unpleasant the task or how lowly the recipient, true humility moves us to minister to others. Such humble service brings rich rewards.

That little girl knows that she has to work, at that early age, so they can survive another day. She did it to serve her family, no matter how hard. As for her parents’ irresponsibility, that is another story.

Teach us, Lord Jesus, the meaning of these words in the depths of our hearts. Help us to respond to them and to be faithful men and women. Help us to strive for that greatness which will shine throughout eternity, to be great as you are great, Lord Jesus, in the same Spirit and by the same power. We pray in your name, Amen +

Commit your life to the Lord, and He will help you.

I DO BELIEVE

Mark 9:24
“I do believe, help my unbelief!”
--------------------------------------------

There are many things that my parents would tell me when I was a child that at first, I will not believe. That the world is round (then why is the road flat?), that the sun is a ball of fire (they why are we not burning?), that the moon is nearer to us than the sun (then why is the moon smaller?). These things, during that time, are beyond my comprehension. So, I would just trust my mother or my father on it. But, when they say to the they love me, I would not anymore question that, for I see it and comprehend it. I knew it before and I still believe it now. I can still it feel that love, coming down from heaven, showering on me and embracing me.

Let us open our eyes to and hear the truth. The Lord Jesus has shown as a lot of miracles in our lives and yet our hearts remain hardened. “Harden not your heart”, and accept Him as your Savior. Ask Him to remove the unbelief in your heart and remain with Him forever.

Our God is the only true God. This is the only truth that we need to believe so we may live eternal life. And faith in Him is our response to God, who reveals Himself and gives Himself to man, at the same time bringing to us the light and the way as we search for the ultimate meaning of life.

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son and our Lord. And finally, in the Holy Spirit. One God, forever and ever. He is ONE TRUE GOD, and that is the only thing that cannot be changed. Feel the love embracing you, today.

Let us pray +

You are great, O Lord, and greatly to be praised: great is Your power and Your wisdom is without measure. We praise You, we worship You, we put our faith in You, for You are the only truth that we believe. You yourself encourage us to delight in Your praise, for You have made us for Yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.

Amen +

The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

OUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN

Mark 2:10
“But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth…”
------------------------------------------------

Our galaxy is but a speck of dust compared to the entire universe, and still it is expanding. Just imagine how big (or how tiny) we are compared to the milky way and to the whole universe. And yet, God is looking at you and me and taking care of us. Yet, we sometimes forget all about these and commit sins against Him.

But, He doesn’t care! God hates sin, but He loves the sinner. The price for God's forgiveness is high, but He paid the price Himself. By Christ's loving act of grace, believers are eternally freed from the penalty and guilt of sin. Once we're covered by the Blood of Christ, God doesn't keep a record of everything. Our forgiveness is total and complete. He also shows us why He did the healing miracles. It wasn't just to make people well – I am sure there were many people in Israel at that time who never received healing. He wasn't doing it because people aren't supposed to be sick, or that believers aren't supposed to be sick. He did it so that the people would know that He had the authority from God to forgive sins.

Will you be committing sin again? Well, try not to. Christian life should be a changed life. A person who claims to be a believer yet continually lives a life that says otherwise should question the genuineness of his faith. Christians should live a progressively more holy life as they grow closer to Christ. A changed life is a holy life – a perfect being devoid of sins.

Go to Him, ask for His forgiveness and He will give it to You, for He has that authority to forgive all sins.

Almighty Father, I love You with all my heart. I thank You for having kept me safe this day. Pardon me the evil I have done, and accept the good I have done. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. May Your grace be always with me and with all my loved ones. In turn, let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love for one another. Amen +

Lord, heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.

LIVING FAITH

Hebrew 11:1
Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.
-----------------------------------------

When I am just starting to play badminton, I would browse the internet to learn more about this game. I would check on the rules, I would learn about the terminologies used in the game, I would watch videos of great badminton players and marvel at their footstep and smash. And I tell myself that I would be a good badminton player. But something is missing – I don’t even have my own racquet to play with! It is not enough that we learn about something, but we have to do it. We have to go to a badminton court and hit shuttlecocks, practice the footwork and play some games. We have to immerse ourselves in playing the game.

The same goes with us being the follower of Christ. Christianity is not just reading the Bible as reading the Bible is not Christianity. Our faith is a free, unmerited gift of God; but it’s not magic. We must learn to accept God’s will and grace, obey them and let it work in us. It’s not enough to say we believe in Jesus. We must accept him as our Lord and Savior and Master. That means committing our lives to him. It means committing to following his example, carrying our own cross and helping others carry theirs. We have to immerse ourselves in His love as we love others.

Almighty Father, let Your Spirit works in me. Take me into Your court, and teach me the right footwork in following You. Let Your love flow around me until my faith in You becomes a living faith. Change me, O Lord, and as I work towards perfection, may Your mercy be received by my new heart.

Oh Lord, we know that faith is more than believing in you; it’s committing to you. We’re ready to do that now. We’re tired of being courtside Christians. We want to go in and play the game. Thank you for immersing us in Your love. We will never be the same again!

Amen +

“Teach me to love, Oh Lord
For such is the true essence of my being.
May I shine because of Your own accord
Working to perfection, my heart exulting.”

I will praise your name for ever, Lord.

ONLY YOU I FOLLOW

Mark 8:34
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”
--------------------------------------------

My mother’s instruction is clear. Ride the jeep going to Divisoria, pay the driver and then get-off in front of the school, near the Church. Easy. But one day, it became complicated. The jeepney I was riding on made a “wrong” turn. I asked the driver “why?” Then I learned that there are more than one way going to Divisoria. This one is not passing in front of my school.

I was scared when I get off. I was trembling for fear of the unknown. I then looked up in the sky, and saw the cross on top of the church. It then hit me! All I need is to follow the cross, then I will reach the church; and the school is right beside it. Easy. Ten minutes late for school, but I made it.

Lord Jesus, you have extended Your invitation to get on board the jeep with You. But I didn’t, and instead rode on a different jeep, colorful ones, that promises to take me to a happier place.

But it suddenly made a wrong turn. I felt being farther and farther from You. I have to get off and take that path following Your cross.

Oh Lord, I accept Your invitation. I will ride on Your jeep and take the road the leads to a life of peace, joy and true happiness. I believe and I know that at the end of my trip, You will be there – Your arms outstretched, not because You are still nailed to the cross, but because You want to hug me, You want to cuddle me, You want me to be Your own, as much as I want to be with Your forever. And I will hug you in return. This time, I will not be late. Amen +

“I will follow You
Follow you wherever You may go
There isn't an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep
Keep me away, away from Your love”

Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.

WHO IS HE TO YOU?

Mark 8:29
“But who do you say that I am?”
-----------------------------------------------

Doctor, President, Mayor – they are all titles. They speak of the office that the person holds; the task he was called to do. So it is with the one we worship, the one whose title we bear when we call ourselves “Christians”. His proper name is “Jesus”. But His title, reflecting the title He holds and the task He was called to do, His title is Christ.

Christ is the Greek word Cristos, a translation of the Hebrew Meshiach, or as we say in English “Messiah”, or the Anointed One. There are a lot of mayors and presidents. But in Jesus’ case it is different. There is only one office of Messiah, of Cristos. And there is only one person who holds that office. So we speak of Jesus the Christ... Jesus Christ. But His title did not matter to Him. He came to the world not to be served, but to serve. And only Him fully deserve to be called the King… the King of all Kings! Jesus - the Christ - who will one day return to proclaim, with the sound of the trumpet, that he is here as almighty Judge and King to usher in the Year of the Lord's Favor.

So how do you know him? Who is Jesus Christ to you? Is He just the statue on the cross, or the man being talked in the Bible or the name you called on to whenever you suffer pain and miseries. Or is He your Lord and your God, whom you accepted to enter your heart and your life? So, no matter what happens, He is your savior, your King above and beyond anyone else.

Let us pray +

Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, our Savior and our King, I choose today to take refuge in You. I choose to fear the Lord and not man, and I choose obedience over willfulness and submission over pride. I am blessed beyond measure already, and I praise and thank You for all You have provided, knowing that we will lack no good thing as we seek You first above all else. To You be all the honor and glory!

Amen +

From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.

RECONCILED TO GOD

Genesis 8:21
“Never again will I doom the earth because of man… nor will I ever again strike down all living beings, as I have done…”
-------------------------------------------

It was a perfect day for a bike ride – early morning, cloudy, dry. I took my trusty old bike and took the road frequently traveled. I was coasting along enjoying the scenery (old houses, junk shops, children playing on the street) when suddenly a car passed by my side at a very fast speed. He missed me alright, by inches but I lost balance in the process. I lost control of the bike and I fell down suffering bruises on my elbow and legs in the process.

The driver may have not noticed, for he (or maybe she) didn’t even bother to stop. I remained in my position for some quite time for I don’t know what to do. Then it hits me – I could just stay there for the rest of the day pondering what happened. Or I can stand-up, ride the bike again, clean my bruises upon reaching the house, and get on with my life.

Throughout our lives, we experienced falling down, not only physically, but spiritually as well. Once we entertain temptations and commits sin, we fall out of the grace of God and come short of His glory. And yet, God has made a promise that He will be sending a Messiah so He does not have to punish men anymore with flood and fire.

However, “for if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Romans 5:10). God is the author of reconciliation and has even taken the initiative to remove the wall of enmity between Himself and mankind. Through His love, Christ became the agent of the reconciliation, having died for all our sins. And finally, man is called to be an ambassador of reconciliation. For through forgiving others can we truly be reconciled with God, for sin that separates is ours that only God could reconcile.

Almighty Father, may reconciliation take place first in our own hearts. It is my fervent hope and prayer that we shall receive the gift of healing and reconciliation and true unity which only You can give, and could come simply from our willingness to open ourselves to receive it.

To you, Lord, I will offer a sacrifice of praise.

HARDEN NOT YOUR HEART

Mark 8:17
Are your hearts hardened?

-------------------------------------------

Someone threw a stone at you, and it hit you really hard. Your head is not the only one bleeding, but your heart as well. For how could a friend of 15 years do this to you. Do you seek revenge, and throw a bigger stone at him? Do you seek revenge, and out of hate, you kick him, punch him, and leave him dying so as to relieve the pain you are experiencing? You would be thinking a lot of things just to take revenge. I am just human, you would say.

But how about throwing “pan de sal” at him. And if you are it, put some "kesong puti" (white cheese) and "sinawsaw pa sa kape" (dipped in hot coffee). Have you thought of forgiveness? Have you thought of reconciliation? Have you thought of leading him for the better, leading him to Jesus? Yes, Jesus who, 2000 years ago, have died so our sins may be forgiven. Jesus, who wants us to forgive not only those who are dear to us, but our enemies as well. Jesus, who through Him, God is still forgiving us our sins, so we may live forever with Him.

Forgiving means letting go of the anger we harbor inside us and allowing God to deal with him or her as he, in his perfect wisdom, sees fit. It doesn't mean excusing a wrong or denying that it ever happened. It means we don't allow ourselves to be consumed with anger towards the one who has done something to us. Instead of cursing him, we pray for him.

Almighty Father, today, I decided to forgive. Today I have gained a better understanding of forgiving others and with your help, I fully forgive from my heart. Just as you have freely forgiven me, I forgive them. Father, I ask you to forgive me for hurting others out of my own hurt and to heal my relationships with others.

+ Our Father, who dwells in Heaven, holy be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, here on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen +

“I forgive and I forget
As the Lord forgives and forgets.”

The Lord will bless his people with peace.

WE ARE THE SIGNS

Mark 8:12
“Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
--------------------------------------------

An atheist professor was teaching a college class and he told the class that he was going to prove that there is no God. He said, “God if you are real, then I dare you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you 15 minutes!” Ten minutes went by He kept taunting God, saying, “Here I am God, I'm still waiting.”

He got down to the last couple of minutes and a BIG 240 pound football player happened to walk by the door and heard what the professor said. The football player walked in the class room and in the last minute, he walked up, hit the professor full force, and sent him flying off the platform. The professor got up, obviously shaken and said, “Wow, where did you come from and why did you do that?” The football player replied, “God was busy, so He sent me!”

Christ is sending us in the same way that God sent Him. As such, we need to briefly explore the implications of these themes for our life. Suffering and hardship were part of Jesus’ mission and we should believe that they should be part of ours to. This will involve us in a degree of discomfort. Church should not be a place where we expect to be comfortable and free from challenges.

We are on a mission. WE ARE HIS MISSION. We have no options. Our mission, announcing the coming of the Kingdom of God through word and deed, is part of what it means to be a Christian. You can’t say that you are not interested in mission and evangelism and still claim to be a Christian. Do you put your hand in your pocket and give sacrificially so that other people can hear what God has done through Jesus?

Almighty Father, You sent your Son to carry out Your mission of redeeming the world. Let the light of Your Gospel of love so shine in the world that it may be transformed into a worthy home for all Your children of every race and country. Together with Your missionaries, may we too share in the missionary work of the whole Church that your Kingdom of justice, love and peace may come in all hearts and in all nations.

Offer to God a sacrifice of praise.

COMPASSIONATE HEALING

Mark 1:41
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
-----------------------------------------

Leprosy, at its later stage, is an incurable disease. Persons who contract leprosy must take regular medication to keep the dreaded disease from spreading. In Jesus’ time, leprosy is a dreaded disease. Since it is very contagious, lepers were forced to live apart in social isolation. They were supposed to shout, "unclean, unclean!" when anyone approached, to warn people to keep their distance. The only comfort such people had was to seek the company of other lepers. However, Jesus has never placed Himself away from lepers. In fact, in the Bible, there were instances wherein in even touched them so they may be healed. And in doing so, He showed the compassionate healing love for the sick.

First, He “stretched out his hand”. To reach out and touch a leper, especially in Jesus’ day, was to put oneself in grave danger of catching this awful and incurable disease. Christ is not afraid to reach out and touch our sinfulness in order to heal us. We should never be afraid to approach Jesus in prayer and penance, no matter how unworthy we may feel.

Then, He “touched him”. It was a healing touch, full of love and friendship. When was the last time you allowed yourself to be touched by the Lord? There is nothing that is impossible for Christ; we have only to approach him in faith, seek him out, and patiently wait for him to reach out, touch us and make us clean.

Finally, He said, “I will do it. Be made clean”. God's does not intend that we suffer, does not send us illness or adversity as a punishment or a test. And once we recognize Him us our Lord and seek His forgiveness, His blood shall wash our since and make us clean. And he has done it. So, reach for Him, let Him touch you and be made clean.

Almighty Father, stretch out to me, touch me and make me clean. Speak to my heart! I hope in You, Lord, because I know I cannot place my hope in the things of the world. I love You, Lord, and I know how much You love me. Clean me of my suffering and forgive me of my sins. Amen +

I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.

CONTENTMENT

Mark 8:8
They ate and were satisfied.
------------------------------------------

According to tradition, this is how an Eskimo hunter kills a wolf. First, the Eskimo coats his knife blade with animal blood and allows it to freeze. He then adds layer after layer of blood until the blade is completely concealed by the frozen blood. The hunter fixes his knife in the ground with the blade up. When a wolf follows his sensitive nose to the source of the scent and discovers the bait, he licks it, tasting the fresh frozen blood.

He begins to lick faster, more and more vigorously, lapping the blade until the keen edge is bare. Feverishly now, harder and harder, the wolf licks the blade in the cold Arctic night. His craving for blood becomes so great that the wolf does not notice the razor-sharp sting of the naked blade on his own tongue, his insatiable thirst is being satisfied by his own warm blood. His carnivorous appetite continues to crave more until in the morning light, the wolf is found dead on the snow!

Almighty Father, You are my contentment. With You in my heart, I shall forever be contented with what I have. You have filled my needs and given the gift of the assurance of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. With that promise firmly in our purses, what more could we possibly need.

Oh Lord, may we not replace You with greed and addiction in our lives. Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that (1 Tim. 6:6-9). In our hearts, we know that we are infinitely richer than the richest man in the world. And we only need to know and believe in Your Words to constantly fuel our hearts and our souls day after day to maintain our status.

“…earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you,
my body longs for you...
Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.”

In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.

EPHPHATHA

Mark 7:34
“Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”)
--------------------------------------

Today the Lord invites you to open up your ears so that you may see. That is how Christians see: with their ears. For our eyes cannot be trusted. Our eyes see hardship in this life and we would assume from that that God is displeased with us, angry with us, against all of us. We see a loved one die, and our eyes tempt us to think that they are dead, and we start blaming God for everything that happened. You see the Divine Service – and you are tempted to think that it is just a man in a funny costume holding up bread and wine for all to see and accept.

When was the last time you learned something from God? I mean you seriously learned something from the Lord. I believe that we should daily be growing in our Christian faith, hearing what He says and doing what He wants us to do.

Trust your ears: the Word of the Lord does not know how to lie. And He is very clear in His promise, once we accept Him as our Lord and our God – “Today you will be with me in Paradise”. Open your ears, hear Him and act on it. Christ longs to teach us – “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matthew 11:15)

We should always be moving forward and maturing in His grace and wisdom. I pray that you might open your Bible today and ask the Lord to teach you truths you’ll never forget… truths that will change your complete outlook on life.

Let us pray +

Open your ears oh Christian people; open your ears and hear the Good News.
Open your hearts oh Christian people, open your hearts and receive the Good News.

Almighty Father, we open our ears to Your words. May we forever live in Your words, constantly following Your will as we claim the promises of Christ into our lives. Amen +

Blessed is he whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered.

ANSWERED PRAYER

Mark 7:29
Then he said to her, “For saying this, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter.”
----------------------------------------

Today’s gospel dwells on a Gentile woman asking the Lord to cast a demon out of her daughter. Not being a Jew, she was totally rejected by Jesus, even comparing her to a dog that ate scraps under her master’s table. The woman was not insulted by the words of Jesus. She accepts His judgment. And then she asks Him again for His help. There is no false pride here. She does not become offended. She recognizes her unworthiness, even as she continues her request. Against all odds, the woman had come to Jesus and had continued to petition Him until her prayers were answered. And she is doing it not for herself, but for her daughter. Total humility, indeed! She had faced a challenge to her faith and she had persisted, wrestling with the Lord until she received the blessing she sought.

The reason God doesn’t answer our prayers is because we really don't believe that He will. There is a sense in which this woman represents the Gentile world. Jesus had come to His own people - the House of Israel. But the leaders of the Jews rejected Him.

That bread of heaven which was rejected and thrown away by the Jews is now received by the Gentiles. But there is a warning. If we do not receive that same bread of life from the hands of Jesus, then it will be taken from us. If you are going to Christ because you want Him to tell you how wonderful you are, then don’t bother. But if you are a loser, then call out to Him and He will help you. An answered prayer because we believed!

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, into your most holy hands I commit the keeping of my heart, asking you for health of soul and body, in the certain hope that you, my most loving Lord, will hear my prayer. To you I entrust all my hopes and consolations, all my trials and miseries, my life and the end of my life, that all my actions may be ordered and disposed according to your will and that of your Divine Son, Jesus Christ.

Amen +

Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

TRUE PURITY

Mark 7:20-23
“But what comes out of the man, that is what defiles him. From within the man, from his heart, come evil thoughts… All these evils come from within and they defile.”
--------------------------------------

We have learned that some of the things that we eat today may harm us. The latest was the melamine (ingredients in milk) scare in Philippines, that can harm our kidneys. Then there are the artificial flavorings that can cause cancer. All these things, when absorbed by the body, could have harmful effects someday.

In today’s gospel, Jesus is very clear that what really defile a person are not the things that comes into his mouth, but those that comes out of it. The Jews at the time of Christ, what you ate especially was important to them, because of the dietary laws that God had given Moses on Sinai. Jesus points out in the first thirteen verses that the rules and regulations that had been added to the Law had become more important to the Jews than the Law itself.

Jesus wants them to understand that the things they say are more important than the things they eat, and that our actions, thought, and statements are what really defile or corrupt us.

Jesus reminds us that our religious ceremonies and lip service don't matter if we don't obey God, and follow His word in all things. And these things many times are not evident to those around us – but God can see them. Our actions may even seem pure and good, but when they are done for the wrong reasons, they really corrupt us. True purity is the purity of the heart!

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, I earnestly wish to be pure in thought, word and deed in imitation of your own holy purity. Obtain for me, then, a deep sense of modesty which will be reflected in my external conduct. Protect my eyes, the windows of my soul, from anything that might dim the luster of a heart that must mirror only Christlike purity. Heart of Jesus, Fount of all purity, have mercy on us.

Amen +

O bless the Lord, my soul!

CREATION

Genesis 2:3
So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work He had done in creation.
-----------------------------------

Let us all praise and thank God for creating, loving and taking care of us all!

It was dark
And You let the universe be bright
And the darkness in my heart was gone
Replaced by Your unending love and light

It was all evening
But You created an arch and created the sky
So I may look forward to another morning
Full of joy and hope; another to day to live by

The earth was barren
And you created seas, grass, herbs and trees
That I may consume and give me strength
So I may live fully; my hunger for You appeased

The night was empty
And You created the moon and the stars
To serve as guide at the darkness hours of my life
So I may get out of the pit without wounds and scars

The day is boring
So You created living creatures for me to behold
And rule over; and they would multiply and populate
To sustain and protect me through life untold

Finally, You created me
In the likeness of Your being; in all glory and splendor.
And would enjoy everything You created
And together with Eve, we live under Your loving candor.

O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!

REMEMBERING TATAY

Mark 6:56
…and as many as touched it were healed.
-------------------------------------

The doctors allowed us and we decided to go home. But my father (who we lovingly called, “Tatay”) has to undergo series of dialysis, for his kidney has already malfunctioned. He us to undergo checkup on a weekly basis for his heart is already showing slowing down. We decided to go home, prepare him for his dialysis & checkups and just put all the trust in the Lord so he may regain his health for the better.

Seven years ago, after three months of medication, Tatay decided to go home, together with God in His Heavenly Kingdom. His body succumbed to organ failures. We wept, we felt really bad at that time – but we prayed really hard that he may finally find rest with Him. Tatay decided to go home, so he may prepare our mansions up there – awaiting us so we may all be together again in God’s glory in heaven.

God does not promise to heal every single disease. If He does, then no one will ever get sick and die from illness. Medicine is wonderful and the advancement in medical technology is likewise a good thing. James 1:17 tells us that “every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above”. Seeking medical treatment for our illnesses glorifies God. Seeking the best medical treatment we can find just acknowledges God's sovereignty in dealing with our sicknesses, making us well and raising us up. Be assured that God approves of us using available means to promote health, including medicine. But there is one important requirement: We must pray about it and receive it with thanksgiving.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, into your most holy hands I commit the keeping of my heart, asking you for health of soul and body, in the certain hope that you, my most loving Lord, will hear my prayer. Into the bosom of your tender mercy, this day, every day of my life, and at the hour of my death, I commend my soul and body. To you I entrust all my hopes and consolations, all my trials and miseries, my life and the end of my life, that all my actions may be ordered and disposed according to your will and that of your Divine Son, Jesus Christ. Amen +

Lord, rise up and save me.

PURPOSE IN LIFE

Mark 5:39
He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.”
---------------------------------------

It could be finished in six months. It could be finished in a year. No one, then, was sure how long it will take. But the purpose of coming over to Mexico is clear: assist the local team in the plant reconfiguration project. For this purpose, we have come.

Even before coming to the world, Jesus knows His purpose – proclaiming the Kingdom of God. His kind of power may not be what the world expected but it is enough to claim us and make us sons and daughters of the most high God. To call us to share in God's mission as the very body of Christ. For when all is said, we are called to proclaim with our lives that the power and truth of God is at work setting us free and the whole world free from death and destruction. We gather under the sign of the cross; the throne of God's power. We are all called to proclaim the message of Christ's reign. We are all called to proclaim to those around us that there is a way which can cast out the demons that deceive us and create chaos in the lives of humanity.

More than ever we need to listen and follow Jesus. For we have been called to follow Jesus and be a witness to God's loving power at work in the world. And to be asked to share in the divine power and mission of Jesus love is the greatest news of all!

How about you, have you come to know your purpose in life? Ask Him.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, You can see me struggling to find my way. I'm coming before You because You are the God of the Universe and worthy of my every praise. I want to discover Your purpose for my life. I know there's more for me out there, and I know You have an awesome plan for me. Thank You Lord, for being here to help me. Thank You for caring enough about me to show me what to do next. I ask all things in Jesus' name.

Amen +

Praise the Lord, who heal the brokenhearted.

OUR SHEPHERD

Mark 6:34
…His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
---------------------------------------

In present times, maybe as in old, a dog is called man’s best friend. I still remember my dog, Tootsie, who would wag his tail when she hears my voice. Moreover, she would bark once she hears uncommon sounds or voice. She knows how and when to protect herself and of course, us.

A sheep is no different from a dog. The sheep follows his master’s voice, “because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers”. And as such, we all are sheeps and Jesus is our good shepherd. Like a good shepherd, he “lays down his life for the sheep”. He came to protect us by giving his life for us. He did this so that we might enjoy life to its fullest and have the hope of living forever.

When we got lost, He would simply call us to return back to the sheepfold. Some of us may not hear Him the first time. But He would constantly call us, knowing that one day, we would heed that call. And to hear that call, use not our ears, but our hearts. He knocks at our hearts, so we may feel His love and know Him more. None of us is good enough to merit God's favor; only Jesus Christ is. We, then, had better make our way to Him! And this is precisely what He invites us to do – “That one who believingly abandons himself to me and to my care, I will take him and keep him forever”.

Jesus' claim to be the "Good Shepherd" is a well-supported one. He proved it very well. He died for His sheeps so we may be saved. And for those of us who are trusting in Him for salvation, He continues to prove it every day with satisfying tokens of His love.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, give me new strength from the courage of Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. He is our Good Shepherd. Let me hear the sound of His voice, lead my steps in the path He has shown, that I may receive His help and enjoy the light of Your presence forever. Amen +

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

HONORING MARRIAGE

Hebrew 13:4
Let marriage be honored among all and the marriage bed be kept undefiled, for God will judge the immoral and adulterers.
----------------------------------

God is telling us that the institution of marriage is His gift to society, so we must honor it. But, marriage is often pictured in a negative slant, with the society often valuing freedom over commitment. But it’s commitment and responsibility that turns a boy into a man, and a girl into a woman. A society without marriage, commitment, and monogamous marital procreation is a society full of boys making babies they can’t care for, and overburdened single moms who have been left to raise children on their own.

The marriage bed is to be kept undefiled, not only by saving sex for marriage, but also by keeping sexual expression within the confines of marriage. Adultery is a sin against God, the marriage union, your spouse, the other party, and the other party’s spouse or future spouse. It is also a sin against your children because the consequence of this sin is going to adversely affect them, too.

Adultery brings some of the deepest pain of all to a marriage/family relationships. It destroys a Christian’s witness and testimony, not to mention their fellowship with God. It is destructive and hurtful to everyone involved. It is the opposite of acting in self-sacrificing love. Repent from this way. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. Restore and preserve the sanctity of the marriage bed and show your spouse (or your future spouse), and children a true act of love.

God’s definition of marriage is clear: One man – one woman, united for life. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife. And the two shall become one flesh. What God has joined together, let no one put asunder.”

Almighty Father, we put our marriage into Your hands. Help us to remember when we first met and the strong love that grew between us. To work that love into practical things so nothing can divide us. We ask for words both kind and loving, and for hearts always ready to ask forgiveness as well as to forgive. Amen +

The Lord is my light and my salvation.

TRUST IN HIM TODAY

Mark 6:8
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick – no food, no sack, no money in their belts.
-----------------------------------

If I knew it would be the last time that I'd see you fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise, I would video tape each action and word, and play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute or two to stop and say "I love you," instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time I would be there to share your day, well I'm sure you'll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow to make up for an oversight, and we always get a second chance to make everything right. There will always be another day to say our "I love you's”. But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get, I'd like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, and today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight. So if you're waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today? For if tomorrow never comes, you'll surely regret the day that you didn't take that extra time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today, and whisper in their ear, tell them how much you love them and that you'll always hold them dear. And if tomorrow never comes, you'll have no regrets about today.

Almighty Father, hide us and protect us in the very midst of any problem that could ever come against us. Take us in Your arms and cradle us with love. You are a great provider and always will be. We reach out unto You for You are always there for us. You have our trust, for trust is faith. And we firmly believe that You will never let us down, nor will You forsake us. Amen +

Listen, Lord, and answer me.

STRIVE FOR PEACE

Hebrews 12:14
Strive for peace with everyone, and for that holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
-----------------------------------------

I grew up in Tondo, a district of Manila. Tondo is notorious for being the poorest and most underdeveloped district of the country. Many of the city's slums are found in this area. My childhood memories would be marked with gangster wars. At night, rival gangs would be seen fighting with each other using hand-made guns, arrows, knives and bolos (sword-like implements). There were even two instances wherein the gang wars happened in front of our house. I didn’t know what happened then, for my mother would ask me to hide under the bed. “Be calm, it will be over soon”, she would tell me.

Nowadays, happening are even bigger wars than this – nation against nation, clan against clan, philosophies against philosophies. And one can even be a front-seat spectator to all of these, what with the magic of televisions and satellites. No need to hide under the bed.

Are these the signs of the times? Two thousand years ago, Jesus already prophesized: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky (Luke 21:10-11).”

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, You have given us and giving us enough information so we may be prepared. May we use prophecy to help us shape our lives, give us direction and guidance in serving You. Oh Lord, we should not mind all of this, rather, we shall put all our trust in You for You have never forsaken those who seek You. You are our comfort in all afflictions and Your promise gives us life. Give us eternal comfort, good hope through grace and may Your consolations cheer our souls. Amen +

“You did not brought destruction, but creation
You did not brought war, but peace
You did not brought uproar, but serenity
You did not promised death, but life.”

The Lord's kindness is everlasting to those who fear him.

FATHER OF ALL LIFE

Mark 5:39
"Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep."
--------------------------------------

I was 10 years old, a Grade 4 student. Back then, I only knew few things in life and do so little – playing, studying, eating, sleeping. I never even thought of getting old. Fifteen years later, a full-pledged engineer working in a multi-national company, I learned far more things – based on experience – playing with experiments, studying pareto charts, still eating and still sleeping. But the thought of getting old is slowly creeping in. And now, another 12 years later, whenever I see old people with their gray hairs and difficulty in moving around, I have come to realized that ALL, yes everyone, will grow old and ultimately die.

After millennia of human existence, it is noteworthy that no one has really made the slightest progress in overcoming death. Despite all the advances of medical science, the state-of-the-art hospitals, the new and hi-tech medical equipment, multiple degree scientists and doctors, the death rate remains exactly what it has always been -- a flat 100%. No progress has been made, and no progress in sight. I think God has intended it to remain that way. He is teaching us something. This is part of the "teaching of God" that goes on for all people. Some he will draw clear on to salvation, as they respond, but all people, everyone, shall be "taught of God," and death itself is part of that teaching.

Death is inevitable. And life with Jesus and in God is the righteous thing to do. Have you learned how to share your work, your family life, your personal life with Jesus, to operate in dependence upon His wisdom, His supply of grace, His forgiveness of failure, to bring all of your life constantly back into connection with Him? Choose life, and you will never go wrong.

Almighty Father, You have revealed Yourself as the Father of all Life. We praise You for the Fatherly care which You extend to all creation, and especially to us, made in Your image and likeness. Give us Your strength that we may never give in to the fears that may tempt us to sin. Bless our families and bless our land, that we may have the joy of welcoming and nurturing the life of which You are the source.

Amen +

They will praise you, Lord, who long for you.

CHILDHOOD YEARS

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

Luke 2:40
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
------------------------------------------

I have zero knowledge or memory of everything that happened since the day I was born up to maybe when I am four to five years old. This is called infant amnesia which is very much related to our brain development. But this doesn’t mean that I did not exist at that time! There are pictures and anecdotes from my parents and relatives that I did. I may have remembered nothing, but my parents do know and remember.

Similarly, we know very little about Jesus as a child. There are only a few remarks and hints in scripture. Most probably, the thought process of the evangelists was to give an account of his public ministry, and not his private life. Hence they say little of Him in regard to his first years. But this doesn’t mean that He did not exist as a child!

He was circumcised (a Jewish tradition) when He was eight days old and was dedicated to service for the Lord. While in Nazareth the child grew and apparently learned the carpentry trade from his earthly father, Joseph. Jesus grew up and "became strong," in other words, he grew physically. He was not weak or frail. Working in the carpentry trade no doubt helped to strengthen him.

Jesus grew up and was "filled with wisdom," in other words, he grew mentally. And finally, Jesus grew up and had "the favor of God" upon him, in other words, he grew spiritually. Hence, Jesus grew physically, mentally, and spiritually. His childhood prepared him for his adult ministry. And so let us also raise our children, that they may be prepared for adulthood. May we help them to grow in strength and wisdom, may they grow in maturity, and may they find favor with both God and with man.

Almighty Father, let us grow in Your love – physically, mentally and spiritually. May we impart the same to our children - willing to help the hurting, offer comfort to the hopeless, and reach out to the powerless. This is how You want us to grow. And this is how we shall live our lives as we follow You and Your will.

They will praise you, Lord, who long for you.

ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY

Mark 1:27
All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”
------------------------------------

I have taught a number of classes on Six Sigma. I even got a certification as a Blackbelt, giving me the “authority” to teach, mentor and coach others. However, that authority would not always guarantee results. I cannot just say to a process problem to go away, and it will just go away. It would entail a rigorous problem solving process to at least solve 80% of the issues at hand. It would not work on paper, someone has got to do it.

Jesus is described in our gospel today as "One having authority." In Jesus we see One Who has that right. Jesus' power gives testimony to the fact that He is God incarnate. But His authority is not only based on what He taught us. His authority came from being able to practice what the preached. God the Father has all power and He gave that power to Jesus. Jesus has the authority to rule, to teach, to forgive, to judge, and much more.

He accomplished a marvelous work. He was the ultimate sacrifice. He paid the price for sin. He took our punishment upon Himself. He suffered and died in our place that we might have everlasting life. Still today, we, believers take authority over evil spirits and cast out demons in Jesus’ name. We are to destroy strongholds of Satan and we do this by taking seriously the authority that is rightfully ours as followers of Jesus. When we walk in obedience to the Lord Jesus, we have His authority. With this authority and His presence, we can accomplish the purposes of God on earth.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, the love Jesus had for this world is manifested by his death and resurrection. Thank you now that this love is shed in the hearts of believers by your Holy Spirit so we can extend it to a needy soul. This love draws us to your Son, our Savior - JESUS. Thank you for giving us the authority to use the name of Jesus in prayer and fighting the spiritual battles. We are not to rejoice in judgment, but in salvation, deliverance and in your presence. In your presence alone is fullness of joy.

Amen +

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
