BE STRONG ENOUGH (08-22-10)

Luke 13:24
“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.”
--------------------------------------------------------

As I bike through the roads of Metro Manila, I would avoid the wide and busy streets. This is where the big buses and trucks ply that would increase the risk of having an accident. Anyway, I am not in a big hurry and just want to enjoy the scenery along the way.

So, I would rather take the side streets or the narrow one. Yes, there would be traffic lights that can slow you down, but at least, it is safer. No big vehicles that can bully you, or worse, knock you down.

Narrow gate or narrow road, the Lord is telling us the same thing. Go through life accepting all the pain and suffering that comes in your way. In the end of it all, you are stronger, wiser and closer to God.

“Endure your trials as “discipline”; God treats you as sons. For what “son” is there whom his father does not discipline? At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:7-8)

The gate is narrow but few find it. Not because God hides it from them, but because few are willing to pay the price to truly follow Jesus.

We cannot live our lives for ourselves and still enter the narrow gate. If we live life to please our sinful nature (flesh) we will not enter that narrow gate, but if we live our lives to please the Spirit we will receive eternal life.

Let us pray +

Gracious God, you call us through the narrow gate. Help us to develop the spiritual discipline we need to do so. As we move in your direction towards an eternal life in heaven. Amen +
