ANOINTED (1-16-10)

1 Samuel 10:1
“The LORD anoints you commander over his heritage. You are to govern the LORD’s people Israel…”
--------------------------------------------

The practice and notion of "anointing" are found in the Old Testament books of Samuel and Kings. These books recount the beginnings, history and disappearance of the kings of Israel, beginning with Saul, David and Solomon, and ending with the destruction of Jerusalem.

King David and his descendants were all anointed in their office as head and leader of the Chosen People.

Today, we, the Church are also anointed. We receive the same Holy Spirit by believing in the anointed one, Jesus Christ and His Gospel. He is the head of the church and we are connected to him as the body by his Spirit.

Everyone who is baptized with water and Spirit is part of the body of Christ and shares the same anointing. The Spirit lives in us, comes upon us for service, and we are able to influence others lives by his working.

God wants us to acknowledge our dependence on Him. That’s one reason we’re to ask for what we need, even though He knows what we need before we ask.

We need the anointing of the Spirit to be real in us, to teach us all things.

And so we ask.
Let us pray +

Dearest Lord, bless your anointed ones that we may live fully in obedience to Your will. Bless our actions that we may serve You and Your people with humility, and help us live a life that will reflect Your goodness through Your Son Jesus Christ. Amen +

Lord, in your strength the king is glad.
