NARROW GATE (06-22-10)

Matthew 7:13
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction…”
-----------------------------------------------------

You may have experienced it before. Or, you may have done it before. The driver of the vehicle you are riding would suddenly make a turn to a very narrow street and navigate through it until it exits again to the main road. For him, he did that because these side streets, though narrow, are really free from hassles, heavy traffic and stop lights that could slow him down.

In life, we often find ourselves making a choice, whether to go through the wide road – meaning, choosing the easier way out to problems; or the narrow gate – meaning, meeting the problem head-on while fully trusting in God. And as we go through the narrow gate, we would soon realize that we can really solve our problems for the path we chose to take is really hassle-free, void of “sinful red lights” that could slow us down.

The gate is narrow but few find it. Not because God hides it from them, but because few are willing to pay the price to truly follow Jesus.

We cannot live our lives for ourselves and still enter the narrow gate. If we live life to please our sinful nature (flesh) we will not enter that narrow gate, but if we live our lives to please the Spirit we will receive eternal life.

Salvation is a simple matter. Those who continue in the light as He is in the light will enter the narrow gate which leads to eternal life, but those who decide to follow the world through the wide road and satisfy their sinful nature will be cast out into the darkness, away from God's presence.

Choose the narrow gate and you will come to know the real path to happiness with the Lord.

Let us pray +

Gracious God, you call us through the narrow gate. Help us to develop the spiritual discipline we need to do so. As we move in your direction towards an eternal life in heaven. Amen +

God upholds his city for ever.
