HE LOVED US FIRST (01-04-11)

1 John 4:7
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God…
--------------------------------------------------------

A man once remarked that he has only one wife but several mistresses. For he is just following what the Bible says… “Love one another, for God is Love”. What a flawed logic… using God’s name in vain and committing adultery at the same time!!!

Let us all be aware that the Bible in English is just a translation from ancient languages. And in Greek language, the word “love” takes on different Greek words – storge, philia, eros and agape.

Storge means "affection" in ancient and modern Greek. It is natural affection, like that felt by parents for offspring.

Philia means friendship that includes loyalty to friends, family, and community.

Éros is passionate love, with sensual desire and longing and can be interpreted as a love for someone whom you love more than the philia, love of friendship. It can also apply to dating relationships as well as marriage.

Agape is one of several Greek words translated into English as love, one which became particularly appropriated in Christian theology as the love of God or Christ for mankind.

Therefore, we should apply the right love to the right situation. Love for your spouse (eros), love for your family (storge), love for your neighbor (philia) and the greatest one of all, love God above all as He loves you (agape). The word “love” can take on a lot of meaning, but it should be the very foundation of your being, and how you live here on earth as you love others as you love yourself.

Let us pray +

Almighty Father, thank you for the love you have given to us. We know that we are not worthy to be loved, but still you even sent your Son to the cross so we can recognize how you love us. Love us more. Amen +

Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
