"This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world."
We won the basketball championship. Everyone in the class was ecstatic. We then carry up our coach, and then our best players for they had been very instrumental in winning this championship. I felt really envious for want to be carried up also and be recognized as one of the best. But I know they won’t. I was just a benchwarmer, not even a second stringer. I felt envious, but there is nothing I can do. My only consolation was to be part of the team and got a 94% grade in my PE (physical educ) subject.
Everyone wants to be famous. Everyone wants to be recognized. Everyone wants to be known by everyone. Everyone but Jesus. He is the son of God, but he practically grew up “away from the camera”, after being born in a manger. When he started his ministry, He had done everything not for his glory but for the glory of God the Father.
After feeding 5,000 men with just five barley loaves and two fish, the people rejoiced and tried to carry Him off to make Him king. But he refused, most probably He ran away upon seeing the people going to Him. He immediately withdrew into the mountain… alone. He most probably had talked to God and gave Him thank. He most probably had rested after that very tiring day of preaching, healing and ministering. Heyy… He is still a man, remember?
Jesus’ humility, then, did not come because He was poor, but rather because of His riches and because of His great love for everyone. Even when Jesus bent low and washed His disciple’s feet and served them in various capacities, He was still Lord and Master of all. Humility was the essence of His very nature and it was in perfect harmony with all His divine attributes. And this is the same humility that He wants us to possess and share. Let us become more and more like Him!
Almighty Father, I am often influenced by what others think of me, pretending to be either richer or smarter or nicer than I really am. Please prevent me from trying to attract attention. Nor let me waste time weaving imaginary situations in which the most heroic, charming, witty person present is myself. Show me how to be humble of heart, like You.
One thing I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord.
